In my mind, there is no other band that owns New York City like Metric. This doesn’t make sense. Metric is a band from Canada that doesn’t tour often and isn’t in any way discernible in sound as “New York”. But I played Fantasies over and over and over again the entire last seven months I was there. When I wasn’t sleeping and heart broken and weighted down and closed off, I played that record. I remember stretches where I stayed up 30, 34, 40 hours at a time, and I would walk to 181st Street in early dawn light, when everything in the city was either grey or white-yellow, and I’d stop for a coffee, buy a newspaper, navigate a sleepy Manhattan, all with my ear buds in. When “Stadium Love” comes on rotation, I swear I see the GW behind my eyelids.
